Women’s Soccer Loses Homecoming to Mariners

BENNINGTON, Vt. – On a beautiful Homecoming day, Southern Vermont College played their first NECC game of the season against Mitchell College. The Mariners defeated the SVC 6-0. Mitchell College improved to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the NECC while SVC dropped to 0-7 overall and 0-1 in the NECC.

“Every coach we have played this year has talked about the heart of this team,” said Head Women’s Soccer Coach Shawn Holcombe. “We have had to face the numbers game and we keep coming back each time.”

The Mountaineers started the game with 10 players and finished with nine when Shawnee Webster got injured in the second half.

SVC keeper, Catrina Cecchini had 19 saves from 47 shots on goal. Mitchell recorded two saves on the day from two shots on goal.

“Catrina [Cecchini] has been a revelation in goal,” said Holcombe. “Danny [Celotto] has been solid in the back and Shawnee [Webster] works like no other in the midfield. “They set the example and the tone and now it’s up for everyone else to step up, so we don’t have to depend on those three all of the time.”

At almost the half way point in the season the Mountaineers have a great deal of hope for the remainder of the season.

“For them I want us to succeed,” added Holcombe. “I want to see them put together 90 minutes of good play instead of 15 minutes at a time and I know we are all working towards it.”

The Mountaineers are back at action at Everett Field on Thursday, September 30th at 4:00pm. Mitchell College continues play on the road at UMASS-Dartmouth on Wednesday, September 29th.
