Elms Downs Women's Soccer in NECC Action
CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College received scoring strikes from four different players to help pace the Blazers to a 4-0 victory over Southern Vermont College in Wednesday evening’s New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women’s soccer game at Leary Field.
With the win, Elms improves to 3-9 on the season, 2-2 in NECC
play, while Southern Vermont falls to 0-11 overall, 0-4 in league
action.
Elms struck quickly when freshman defender Allyson
Witaszek fired a shot that was blocked, scooped up the rebound
and then lofted the ball into the back of the net giving Elms a 1-0
lead 3:56 into the contest.
Freshman midfielder Christina Goodchild netted the Blazers’ second goal when she controlled a pass from junior midfielder Erica Griffo and blasted a shot to the right corner of the net to extend the lead to 2-0 at the 9:29 mark.
In the 65th minute of play, Elms scored its third goal of
the game when Goodchild delivered a pass to junior forwardJennifer
Killion who one-touched the ball to freshman
midfielder Gianna Gorneault who then drilled the ball
into the back of the net from 15 yards out.
Five minutes later, the Blazers executed a brilliant run when freshman defender Brianna Valente launched a well-placed cross to Griffo who finished with the scoring strike to give Elms a 4-0 advantage.
Southern Vermont goalkeeper Catrina Cecchini was
stellar between the pipes for the Mountaineers, collecting 31 saves
in the losing effort.
