Southern Vermont College Womens Soccer Drops Kick-Off To Lyndon State
BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Southern Vermont College women's soccer team lost 3-1 in non-conference action against Lyndon State College Wednesday night at Everett Field. The Mountaineers lone goal came from freshman Shawnee Webster in the 6th minute of play.
SVC, coming off a tough 0-14 season, came out strong with Head Coach Shawn Holcombe's biggest recruiting class yet (10) putting pressure on the LSC defense early. Webster scored on a sliding kick into the left corner of the Hornets goal off a perfect pass from newcomer Brandi Cain.
The Mountaineer defense was solid with freshman Amber Mulhern at goal as she finished with 14 saves in 90 minutes. But the Hornets struck in the 38th minute with an unassisted goal from freshman Abby Fadden when a shot from Shauna Buck hit the post and bounced in front of Fadden in the box for the easy score.
The score was tied 1-1 at the break and the Hornets continued to put the pressure on the SVC defense scoring in the 49th minute with an unassisted strike from senior Kathy Kline to give LSC the lead. Buck rounded out Lyndon State's scoring when she got a neat pass from Michelle Wilcox in what would be the final 3-1 score.
Sophomore Samantha Smith got the win at the goal for the Hornets with a one save.
The Mountaineers hit the road for to face non-conference foe Pine Manor Saturday, Sept. 5th. Kick-off is at 12:00 p.m. Follow Mountaineer sports by going to www.svcathletics.com.
