Two Goals Can't Lift SVC Past Wildcats
BOSTON, Mass. - The Southern Vermont College women's soccer team had a season high two goals but it was not enough to beat their New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) foe Wheelock College Sunday losing 9-2.
The Mountaineers (0-13 overall and 0-7 in the NECC) were down 2-0 when the Wildcats (3-10-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the NECC) Stacy Seidner and Alanna Marie Dias connected with the back of the frame in the 9th and 29th minute of play. One minute later Southern Vermont freshman Daryl Aubin (Forestdale, R.I./North Smithfield HS) received a perfect pass from junior Kimberly Bevis (Valley Falls, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) and nailed it past the hands of a diving Wheelock goalkeeper Nicole Zina to make it 2-1.
It was 4-1 at the half after a few more shots slipped past the hands of Mountaineer freshman goalkeeper Jillian Neudecker (Johnsonville, N.Y./Tamarac HS). Neudecker finished the day with 15 saves out of 24 on goal. Three quick second half goals gave Wheelock a 7-1 cushion with only 32 minutes to go.
SVC never gave up against all odds when in the 60th minute of play Aubin set up Senior Leslie Surdam (Hoosick, N.Y./Hoosick Falls HS) with a dead-on cross pass that Surdam kicked right past the Wildcats second goalkeeper Victoria Fernandes to make it 7-2.
Wheelock's Seidner got her second goal of the game in the 88th minute and Christine Pellerin launched one past Neudecker to make it 9-2 with a minute left to play.
The Mountaineers play their final game of season at home against NECC foe Newbury College (1-14 overall and 0-6 in the NECC) Saturday, October 25, on Everett Field. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.
