Women's Hoops Picked Eighth in Pre-Season Poll
BENNINGTON, Vt.- The Southern Vermont Women's basketball team was chosen eighth in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) pre-season poll. The poll is voted on by all coaches in the conference. NECC newcomer Regis College earned the top vote with seven first place votes and 93 points.
The Mountaineers return its core from a year ago. Senior captain Sherrita Hall averaged just under nine points a year ago. 1000 point scorer Joa Claircius will play in the back court for the Mountaineers. Clarcius scored 408 points in the 2010-11 season. SVC will also return 3-point specialist Alyssa Davis. Davis has made 105 shots from beyond the arc, the most in a SVC career.
In the back court Southern Vermont will also add sophomore Ashliy Veliz. Veliz will give the Mountaineers another scoring threat to go along with Hall, Clarcius, and Davis.
Southern Vermont will also have a deep front court. Captain Christie Henry and sophomore Kourtney Hewitt will give SVC height on the boards. Senior captain Tasha Smith will also help SVC in the rebounding game.
The Mountaineers add three freshmen in 2011-12. Shauna Poole, Jessica Lanoue, and Jyline Varin will all look to crack the SVC lineup.
Southern Vermont will open at SUNY Cobleskill on November 15th, and will host its home opener on November 29th against New England College.
