BENNINGTON, VT – The Southern Vermont College Mountaineers were unable to overcome a 19 point halftime deficit and fell to the Becker Hawks 65-54 on Saturday afternoon, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Women's basketball action.
The game was the last regular season home game for the Mountaineers who celebrated their four seniors; Tasha Smith, Joa Claircius, Sheritta Hall, and Alyssa Davis. Claircius has had a tremendous four year career at Southern Vermont and will leave as the all time scoring leader. Alyssa Davis has also has had a solid four year career and has made the most 3-point field goals in school history.
Chelsea Joubert led the Hawks with 21 points behind 5-12 shooting. Kristina Desnoyers also had a strong game for the Hawks as she recorded a double-double with 13 rebounds and 10 points. Claircius led the way for Southern Vermont with 20 points behind 9-24 shooting.
The Mountaineers, who have been plagued by late season injuries, were only able to use seven players and were unable to overcome a strong first half effort from the Hawks which left the Mountaineers down 40-21 at halftime. The Mountaineers opened the second half on a strong run led by a great defensive effort which held the Hawks to only two points for the first eight minutes of the second half. The Hawks finally got their offense back late in the second half and were able to thwart the Mountaineer comeback and hold on for a 65-54 win.
With the win the Hawks improve to 7-16 on the season and 7-9 in NECC play. With the loss the Mountaineers drop to 7-18 on the season and 6-11 in NECC play. Becker is off until next Thursday when they play host to NECC opponent Elms College. Tipoff is set for 7:00pm. Southern Vermont wraps up their regular season next Saturday when they travel to NECC opponent Newbury. Tipoff is set for 12:00pm.
