Veliz Not Enough As Mountaineers Fall to Hawks

LEICESTER, MA- Ashliy Veliz scored 18 points and pulled down 18 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Southern Vermont College Women's Basketball team fell 70-61 on the road at Becker College in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) matchup. It was the third time Veliz has recorded a double-double this season and the second time in the last three games.

Four Hawks led the way to victory as they each scored in double figures. Tatiana Mojica and Kristina Desnoyers each pulled in a double-double for the victors. Mojica scored 18 points and grabbed 10 boards as Desnoyers dropped 11 points and had 17 rebounds. Chelsea Joubert also scored 18 points for Becker, and Michelle Griczika recorded 10 points.

Veliz and Dayna Carpenter were the only two Mountaineers in double digits. Carpenter scored 11 points for SVC in the defeat. Veliz played an even game as the sophomore forward had eight points in the first half and scored 10 in the second half. Kourtney Hewitt and Alyssa Davis each scored nine points for Southern Vermont.

Becker got off to a hot start as the home squad opened a 9-2 lead three minutes into the game. The lead would open to as much as 10 before SVC would race back into the game. The Mountaineers closed the score to 25-24 on a Carpenter three, with four minutes left to play in the half. The Hawks however, maintained the lead for the rest of the half and went into the break with a 36-30 advantage.

In the second frame the Hawks once again jumped out to a quick start. Six minutes into the half Becker led 48-36. SVC once again got the game to as close as two, when Sherrita Hall made a layup at the nine minute mark.  Becker went on a 6-0 run over the next two minutes to open a lead that Southern Vermont never recovered from.

SVC falls to 4-9 and 3-3 in NECC play and the Hawks improved to 2-11 and 2-5 in conference play. The Mountaineers have never beat Becker as the all time series is now at 9-0 in favor of the Hawks. SVC will host league leading Regis at 8PM on Thursday at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.  Becker travels to Wheelock on Thursday with tip scheduled for 7:30.
