Mountaineers Use Strong First Half to Defeat Winless Lynx

Bennington, VT- The Southern Vermont College Mountaineers cruised to a 76-59 victory over the Lesley Lynx on Saturday afternoon.  With the win, the Mountaineers improved to 4-8 on the season and 3-2 in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC).  With the loss, the Lynx dropped to 0-10 on the season and 0-5 in the NECC.

Ashley Veliz paced the Mountaineers with 18 points and nine rebounds in only her second start of the season.  Joa Clarcius entered the night six points behind the SVC's all time scoring record set by Denise Welch who played from 1993-1997.  Clarcius broke the record at the 15:07 mark in the second half, and is now the all time scoring leader for Women's Basketball at SVC.  Clarcius finished the game with 15 points behind 5-12 shooting.  Emily Fleming led the Lynx with 21 points behind 6-17 shooting.  Grace Amato notched a double-double for the Lynx with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 22-12 lead in the first half.  The Lynx were able to battle back behind back to back jump shots by Sarah Apgar and pulled within one with 5:13 left in the first half.  The Mountaineers responded with a 13-1 run to end half to take the lead 35-22 at the break.  The Mountaineers would never relinquish the lead as the Lynx were unable to ever pull back within 10.

Southern Vermont will be in action next at Becker College on January 17th at 6pm.  Lesley plays next at NECC opponent Mitchell College on January 17th.  Tipoff is set for 5pm.
