Mountaineers Jump on Wildcats in First Half En Route to NECC Victory

BENNINGTON, Vt.- The Southern Vermont College Women's Basketball team opened its New England Collegiate Conference schedule Tuesday evening with a 66-28 victory over Wheelock College at the  Mountaineer Athletic Center.  SVC used a strong first half on both ends of the court to earn the NECC victory.

The Mountaineers had three players in double figures in the win Tuesday. Joa Claircius (Clermont, FL) led the way with 19 points. Ashliy Veliz (Glendale, CA) contributed with 12 points, but it was the play of senior point guard Sherrita Hall that led the way. Hall had 10 points and four assists in order to control the SVC offense.

Wheelock was led by Keneisha Milton (Boston, MA) who recorded  a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Milton had 10 boards on the defensive end while she cleaned up five offensive misses. Sarah McCaffrey (East Taunton, MA) and Jo Gomes (Boston, MA) each had six points in the defeat.

SVC out scored Wheelock 43-7 in the first half behind strong offensive and defensive play. In the second half Wheelock played nose to nose with the Mountaineers as the second half score was 23-21 in favor of SVC.

Southern Vermont will take on non-conference opponent Norwich on Thursday evening before hosting Mitchell College Saturday afternoon.
