Pilgrims Use Strong Second Half to Defeat Mountaineers

BENNINGTON, Vt.- The Southern Vermont College Women's basketball team hosted its home opener Tuesday evening at the Mountaineer Athletic Center against New England College. The Pilgrims spoiled SVC's opener with a 75-45 non-conference victory.

In the first half, Southern Vermont battled the undefeated Pilgrims to a 34-27 halftime score in favor of NEC. After SVC cut the lead to 8-7, New England College went on a 10-0 run to give them an 11 point advantage half way through the first frame. The Mountaineers once again cut the lead, this time to four points before the Pilgrims went to the break with a seven point advantage.

NEC opened the second half on a 9-0 run once again the Southern Vermont was never able to overcome. SVC got as close as twelve before another 7-0 Pilgrim run led New England College to victory.

SVC was led by New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Player of the week Joa Claircius who scored 16 points. Ashliy Veliz and Dayna Carpenter each scored eight for the Mountaineers.

For the victors Rachel Williams had 16 points, while Taylor Burgess scored 13 and Kayla Lawlor had 11. Williams and Burgess each had a double-double as Williams had 11 rebounds and Burgess pulled down 10.

The game was anything but clean played as the two teams combined for 66 turnovers. Southern Vermont was out-rebounded in the game 56-32.

The Mountaineers will travel to Curry College Thursday evening for its fourth road game in five games.
