CHESTNUT HILL, MA – For the second time in two games, the Southern Vermont College Women's basketball team fell by the score of 79-65. This time the Mountaineers traveled to Pine Manor College. In its first game the Mountaineers struggled in the first half, but Thursday night it was the opposite as SVC was outscored by eleven in the second half.
Pine Manor senior Therline Dumeran (Cambridge, PA) scored a career-high 41 points and grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds Pine Manor pulled ahead just under nine minutes into the first half and led the remainder of the way to secure their first victory of the season. A layup by Pine Manor sophomore Ashley Carusone (Nasha, NH) gave the Gators an 11-10 lead as Pine Manor began to separate itself from the Mountaineers. Pine Manor established its biggest lead of the first half at 27-17, following a free-throw by Dumeran with 3:47 remaining.
Southern Vermont then rallied to close the gap as Dayna Carpenter (Northampton, MA) and Joa Claircius (Clermont, FL) each scored twice in a three and half minute span to pull Southern Vermont to within three, trailing 31-28. Carpenter finished with a team-high 17 points and six rebounds, while Claircius finished with 15 points and two assists.
Leading at the start of the second, Pine Manor extended its lead to ten points at 17:33 following a layups by senior Phibe Pham (Boston, MA) and Carusone. Pham finished with 11 points and two assists while Carusone finished with seven points in the game.
From that point forward, Dumeran made sure that Pine Manor would stay in front, scoring 28 of her 41 points in the second-half helping to extend the Pine Manor lead to as many as 17 points by late in the second-half.
For Pine Manor, Yaifia Dowridge (White Plains, NY) also finished in double figures, scoring 10 points. Carusone and senior Jessica Gilmore (Dorchester, MA) each finished with seven boards.
Southern Vermont will stay on the road next Tuesday when they travel to Green Mountain College. The tip off for the game is scheduled for 6:30PM
