Mountaineers Can't Overcome Slow Start in Season Opener

COBLESKILL, NY- SUNY Cobleskill held on to a strong first half lead in order to win its season opener over the Southern Vermont College Mountaineers, Tuesday evening. As Division III college basketball kicked off around the country, the Mountaineers fell 79-65 in the Iorio Gymnasium at SUNY Cobleskill.

For Southern Vermont, Dayna Carpenter (Northampton, MA) came off the bench to lead the Mountaineers with 17 points. Joa Claircius (Clermont, FL) scored 14 and Ashliy Veliz (Glendale, CA) had 10 in the defeat.

SUNY Cobleskill used a strong opening half as the Fighting Tigers raced out to a 48-34 halftime lead. In the second half each team scored 31 points as SVC kept the lead where it was. SVC caught the lead to 12 with less than 14 minutes left in the contest but SUNY Cobleskill went on a 14-4 run to push the game out of reach.

The Mountaineers drop to 0-1 in the 2011 campaign. SVC will travel again on Thursday to Pine Manor College. The last time the two teams met in 2009-10, SVC won 65-58. The tip off for the game will be 7:00PM.
