Claircius Named All-NECC Second Team

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Eight of the nine sponsored programs were represented on 2010-11 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Women’s Basketball All-Conference Team, it was announced today by Commissioner Del Malloy. In addition to the All-NECC honors, three separate major individual award winners and the team sportsmanship award were also voted upon and selected this week.

Daniel Webster Eagles (17-10) finished 9-7 in conference play winning the 2011 NECC Women’s Basketball Tournament title and the NCAA post-season women’s basketball bid. The Eagles’ junior forward Alycia Gervais (Windham, Conn.), a sport management major, was named the 2010-11 NECC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year. In conference play, Gervais averaged 13.9 points per game, 10.6 rebounds per game, 2.4 assists per game and 2.1 steals per game. Gervais was 8th in scoring, 5th in rebounding, 5th in field goal percentage (.450), 10th in steals and 11th in three-point field goals made.  Overall, she averaged 13.9 points per game and 10.6 rebounds per game. Bosques was a NECC Player of the Week along with a NEWBA honor roll member this year. Bosques is currently 9th in the Daniel Webster record book for career points.


Becker College Hawks freshman forward Tatiana Mojica (Worcester, Mass.) nabbed the 2010-11 NECC Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year award for her first season of collegiate play. Mojica, a sport management major, finished seventh in the NECC in scoring averaging 14.0 points per game.  She was 10th in rebounding (7.8 rpg), 3rd in field goal percentage (.480) and 10th in free-throw percentage (.643). Overall she was 8th amongst NECC players averaging 13.0 points per game and 9th in rebounding at 6.9 rebounds per game. She was named NECC Rookie of the Week twice.

Mitchell College Mariners’ second year head coach Bernadette Macca was named the 2010-11 NECC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year. She led the Mariners to a 14-10 overall record and 11-4 in the NECC earning the second seed in the 2011 NECC Women’s Basketball Tournament.  Macca has a .551 winning percentage with a 27-22 record.

The Wildcats of Wheelock College (5-18), led by head coach Brooke Freeburg, were honored as the 2010-11 NECC Team Sportsmanship Award recipients. The Wildcats finished 4-11 in conference play this season.

Voting for the All-NECC team and each of the major awards was conducted among all NECC women’s basketball head coaches.

Joining Gervais on All-NECC First Team was fellow Eagles’ junior Vanessa Bosques (N. Windham, Conn.), Lesley senior Kaitlyn Wechsler (Merrick, N.Y.), Elms junior Ericka Murphy (Torrington, Conn.) and Mitchell senior Alix O’Neil (New London, Conn.).

Second team honors went out to a pair of Lesley seniors Brianne Caira (Pelham, N.H.) and Rachael O’Mara (Levittown, N.Y.), Southern Vermont senior Joa Claircius (Clermont, Fla.), Daniel Webster senior Alyssa Regan (Salem, N.H.) and Newbury sophomore Catherine O’Connell (Quincy, Mass.).


Five players received honorable mention along with Mojica including Wheelock sophomore Keneisha Milton (Boston, Mass.), Mitchell sophomore Kaylee Cerruto (Torrington, Conn.), Elms junior Katie Condon (Sandy Hook, Conn.) and Newbury junior Morganna Machado (Attleboro, Mass.).
