Mountaineers Come Away With A Win At UMASS Tourney

BOSTON, Mass. - The Southern Vermont College women's basketball team came away from the 2009 Tip-Off Classic at the University of Massachusetts Boston with a 1-2 record losing Friday night to the Framingham State College Rams 86-63, while reigning victorious Saturday against Pine Manor 65-58.

The Rams improve to 1-0 on the season, while the loss drops the Mountaineers to 0-2.

Davis finished the night with 15 points to lead the Mountaineers while sophomore guard Joa Claircius chipped in with 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals in the losing effort. Pannell posted eight points in only 12 minutes of play and had five rebounds to round-out the Mountaineers offensive attack.

Senior forward Toya Chester netted a game high 25 points on an 8-11 shooting to lead the rams over Southern Vermont College.

Sophomore forward Pannell netted 15 points and ripped down 15 rebounds to lead Southern Vermont over the Pine Manor College Gators.

The Mountaineers never trailed in the game and improve to 1-2 on the season, while the Gators fall to 0-3.

Southern Vermont held Pine Manor to just 24.1% (20-83) shooting for the afternoon, including just 13.5% (5-37) in the first half.

Pannell was 6-11 from the floor for the Mountaineers, while Davis finished with 15 points, three assists and a pair of rebounds. Sophomore Joa Claircius, who was named to the All-Tournament team, chipped in with 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Wright also earned All-Tournament honors and ended the day with a double-double of 19 points and 15 boards to go with three steals for Pine Manor, while Beauford was just a rebound shy of a double-double of her own with 15 points and nine rebounds in addition to five assists and a blocked shot. 

Southern Vermont will be in action again on Tuesday, November 24 at 7:00 p.m. when it travels to Paxton, Mass. to take on Anna Maria College.
