Mountaineers Cut Blue Jays Lead But Come Up Short

BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Southern Vermont College women's basketball team cut down a 15 point deficit to bring it within four points with 1:11 left on the clock but could not prevail over the visiting non-conference St. Joseph College (Conn.) losing 76-69 in the Field House Thursday evening. Junior guard Iiaria Schiano led all scorers with 24 points for the SJC, while sophomore guard Joa Claircius led SVC with 17 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.

The Mountaineers out-rebounded the visitors 56-37 and were led by junior Kiara Bates who pulled down 12 boards and also had 14 points to have the games only double-double. Junior Tiarra Hall and freshman Christie Henry each had 11 rebounds in the effort. Sophomore guard Alyssa Davis chipped in 14 points and senior Rachel Pannell added 11 to round out the box for the Mountaineers.

The first half goes to Blue Jay junior guard Nathalie Masterreno who drained five triples. She finished the game with 22 points, five steals, and four assists. Freshman forward Terese Cerins also posted a solid performance with 15 points and five rebounds for SJC.

The Mountaineers fall to 3-20 with the loss, while the Blue Jays improve to 4-17 with the win.

The Mountaineers are back in action Saturday, February 13th, when it hosts the Newbury College Nighthawks at 1:00 p.m.
