Mountaineer Softball Splits With Eagles

Game 1 Box Score  Game 2 Box Score

BENNINGTON, Vt. The Southern Vermont College softball team won its first game of the year when it split with the Green Mountain College Eagles winning the first game 9-6 and losing the second 10-3 Tuesday afternoon at Willow Park Field. Sophomore captain Alyssa Davis led the way for the Mountaineers going 3-for-6 with two triples, a home run, scoring three times, and tallying four RBI’s in the doubleheader.

The split gives SVC a 1-8 record, while the Eagles walk away 1-9.

The Mountaineers had a 1-0 lead after two innings on an inside the park homerun from sophomore Allison Murphy, of Sunderland, Vt.

After another scoreless inning for the Eagles, SVC mounted five runs to make it 6-0 starting out when Kiara Bates stole home for the first run of the inning. An RBI single by Kayla Whitman of Bennington, Vt. made it 3-0. Whitman made her way around the bases and stole home to make it 4-0. A few batters later Davis hit a triple to leftfield that sent freshman Talan Barron home to make it 5-0. Davis scored moments later on a wild pitch by GMC to make it six for Southern Vermont.

The Eagles scored two runs in the 5th inning but the Mountaineers struck back with three more runs in the bottom of the 5th on a triple by Davis to left center that scored Murphy and Barron.

Green Mountain attempted a rally in the seventh, as it scored three runs but SVC’s defense held strong, securing the victory 9-6.

Sophomore Gabrielle Remillard got the win in the circle for SVC as she pitched a complete game striking four and walking one. Sophomore Cass Neimeth-Lazar fell to 0-5 overall for the Eagles.

In the second game the Eagles were only up 3-1 after three innings of play. A six run fourth inning gave the young squad a good cushion to secure a 10-3 victory over Southern Vermont.

Freshman Jessica Measheaw got her first collegiate victory as she improved to 1-4 as she struck out two and walked two. Barron (0-4) took the loss for SVC as she struck out two and walked 11.

Whitman went 4-for-7 on the day with a triple, two RBI’s, and scored twice for SVC. Barron, Murphy, Bates, and Leigh Meola each had two hits to round out the box for SVC.

Senior Katie Jablonksi and sophomore Karen Davidson each tallied three hits for the Eagles. Freshman Chelsea Paul had two hits, including a home run, while knocking in four runs to round out the box for GMC.

The Mountaineers travel to SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday, April 7th, with the first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
