Mountaineers Softball Splits With Fighting Tigers

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Southern Vermont College softball team split with non-conference foe the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers winning the first game 14-10 and dropping the second game 15-4 Thursday afternoon at Fighting Tiger Park. The Mountaineers were lifted once again by sophomore Allison Murphy in the first game as she crushed two home runs for five RBI’s.
The split gives Southern Vermont a 2-15 record, while the Tigers end up with a 4-20 overall record.
In game one the Mountaineers wasted no time getting on the board when sophomore Alyssa Davis scored on a passed ball and junior Tiarra Hall knocked an RBI single to make it 2-0 SVC. The Fighting Tigers responded with seven runs of its own to take a 7-2 heading into the second inning.
The Mountaineers kept its composure and took advantage of Cobleskill pitching woes in the second inning with junior Kiara Bates scoring on a passed ball to make it 7-3. A few pitches later sophomore Kayla Whitman scored on a wild pitch to bring SVC within three runs of tying the game up. Freshman shortstop Talan Barron extended the inning with a monster RBI double that sent Davis home again. Only down by two Murphy stepped up to the plate and the third baseman crushed a two run homer to tie up the game at 7-7.

After a scoreless third for the both squads Southern Vermont went to work again with two singles from Whitman and Davis. Murphy made it five RBI’s on the day with another blast to clear the bases and giving SVC the lead again at 10-7.
In the sixth inning senior Amy Balawender tacked on another run for the Mountaineers with an RBI single that scored sophomore pitcher Gabrielle Remillard.
Cobleskill was not finished though as it chipped away at the SVC lead in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to make it 11-10, only one down on the Mountaineers.
Southern Vermont’s’ hot bats continued in the seventh inning with Davis hitting a two RBI double and then scoring on a Barron single to give SVC the 14-10 win.
Barron and Davis each had three hits to round out the Mountaineer box. Remillard got the win to improve to 2-8 overall as she fanned eight Fighting Tigers.
In the second game Cobleskill got 10 runs in the first inning and the Mountaineers could not cut the lead as it lost 15-4. Whitman led the offense going 2-for-3 with an home run. Hall, Murphy, Balawender, and Davis each added hits for SVC. Barron (0-6) took the loss in the circle to walking six and striking out one.
Southern Vermont is back in action on Saturday, April 17th, when it hosts NECC foe the Daniel Webster College Eagles with the first game starting at 12:00 p.m. at Willow Park Field.
