SVC's Fall Sports Return to Campus

BENNINGTON, Vt.- Fall Sport athletes return to the campus of Southern Vermont College today, August 18th,to kick-off another year of athletics. Men’s and Women’s Soccer along with Women’s Volleyball are among the three teams to return; as cross country will begin its pre-season on August 25th.  There will be 50 athletes, between the three teams, that move into the dorms today in preparation for their first practices Friday.

The Women’s Volleyball team will look to improve on an impressive 2010 season. Head Coach Josh Stokes took the program to new levels last season with a 14-9 record and a conference semi-final appearance. This year’s team will be led by 2010 1st team All Conference players Hershey Canta and Joanna Hogue. Hogue was the NECC Defensive Specialist of the Year a season ago. Stoke will test his program against top level opponents in Ithaca, Simmons, and Williams.

Men’s Soccer Head Coach Tim Penrod is excited about his incoming class, which he hopes can push the program to the next level. Last fall Penrod led his team through a battle tested conference tournament before falling to Daniel Webster 2-0 in the championship game. The Mountaineers won 2-1 on the road at 4th seeded Mitchell College, before taking down top seeded Lesley in penalty kicks in the semi-finals. In order to test the level of the program SVC will take on tough non-conference opponents, Wheaton, Skidmore, and Castleton St. The Mountaineers will return NECC Most Valuable Player Nick Haggerty who will look to lead the attack again in 2011.

“We return a lot of our core players from last year’s team and with a good incoming class, we are looking to start where we left off last season.  Our goal is to take the next step by making the NCAA tournament for the first time in Men’s Soccer history.” said senior captain Haggerty.

Michael Zauzig returns five core players from a year ago that along with key incomers look to turn the Women's Soccer program around. Zauzig, who coached under SVC’s Women's Soccer winningest coach, Scott McKenzie at Juniata, has hopes of bringing the program back to the prominence of the late 90’s. The Mountaineers have the goals set on making major strides forward in 2011 and into the future.
