BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College Men's Volleyball team held a block party Wednesday evening as the Mountaineers blocked the visiting Newbury College Nighthawks 12 times in its 3-0 victory at the Mountaineer Athletic Center, in New England Collegeiate Conference (NECC) Men's Volleyball action.
The 12 blocks is the second highest for the Mountaineers this year, as the only time they have had more was in a 3-0 victory over SUNY IT. Joseph Dighton led SVC with seven blocks as Connor Murray had five and Corey Mills contributed four. Dighton also led SVC with 12 kills in the match to go along with six kills from freshman teammate Gabriel Franco. Anthony Ayala led Southern Vermont with 13 assists.
The Nighthawks were led offensively by Chris Chin with seven kills. Newbury's trio of players Danny Kim, Justin Franks, and Chi Yin Li all finished with five kills. Setter Cody Braden had 24 assists in the match. Alex Amylon led the Nighthawks with seven digs as Li contributed six.
The Mountaineers have a program best nine wins with a 9-14 record and improve to 6-3 in NECC play, one win away from making the NECC playoffs for the second consecutive year. Newbury drops to 6-12 overall and 4-6 in NECC play.
