Haggerty Earns NECC Player of the Week
BENNINGTON, Vt.- After leading his team to a 5-2 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) victory Saturday afternoon, Nick Haggerty was honored by the NECC as the Player of the Week, for games September 12th-18th. The senior captain netted four goals, including the game winner against Regis College, Saturday. The weekly honor was the fifth in Haggerty’s decorated SVC career.
“He’s a big time college player. Every time Nick steps on the field, his objective is to score multiple goals. He has that killer instinct that sets him apart from others,” said Head Coach Tim Penrod.
With his four goal performance Haggerty sits at 98 points in a SVC uniform, which moved him into second place all time. Haggerty has scored 41 goals and has also tallied 16 assists setting him just shy of the 100 point mark.
“Nick is a lot of things to our program,” explained Penrod. “There is a certain amount of confidence with him on the field. The consistent work rate drives the rest of the team forward.”
Southern Vermont (4-3 1-0 NECC) went 2-1 last week with wins over Regis and Sage College, before they fell to Wheaton, Sunday afternoon. The Mountaineers are back in action this Saturday when they travel to Mitchell College for an NECC matchup. The past two seasons the Mitchell Mariners have won the regular season matchup between the two teams; only for the Mountaineers to eliminate them from the NECC playoffs in each season.
