Naaktgeboren Goal Gives Men's Soccer Edge on the Eagles
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - The Southern Vermont College men’s soccer team defeated the Juniata College Eagles men’s soccer team at the 2010 DVC Soccer Classic 1-0 Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers lone goal came via junior Ben Naaktgeboren, his second of the year, on a nifty pass from freshman Rob Butler in the 74th minute of play. SVC looks to win the tourney when it faces Delaware Valley on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
Head Coach Tim Penrod, who is a graduate of Juniata, was
elated with the result, “Any chance you have to play against
your alma mater its a special occasion. I'm very proud of the way
our guys represented themselves today. We kept our heads and stayed
disciplined, which is something we've struggled with in the
past.”
Mountaineer goalkeeper Aaron Eschler has a solid game with
eight saves in 90 minutes of play. Southern Vermont is happy to
have a win under its belt as it has high hopes for the 2010 season,
“Getting our first win is a big step. We felt like we
deserved to win on Wednesday [lost 3-2 in overtime to Norwich], but
sometimes you get unlucky. We were under a lot of pressure today
most of the game. However, we found a way to win. Good teams can do
that consistently. We have a lot of work to do, but we're on our
way,” said Coach Penrod.
Juniata outshot Southern Vermont 11-6 and had a 4-3 advantage
in corner kicks as well. Juniata's keeper, Ezra Cassel finished the
day with four saves and played all 90 minutes of the match.
