BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Southern Vermont College men's soccer team tied with the Lesley University Lynx on Saturday 1-1 in a New England Collegiate Conference showdown. The Mountaineers' Nick Haggerty scored its lone goal, his 11th of the year.
With the tie Southern Vermont is 8-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the NECC, while Lesley is 7-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in Conference play.
The Mountaineers despite being outshot 26-13 were more accurate with their offensive approach as each Goalie, Aaron Eschler for SVC and Zach Almeida-Beers for LU, had seven saves in 110 minutes of play.
Haggerty scored in the 18th minute unassisted and Southern Vermont looked to be on track for their eighth straight victory after holding off the Lynx 1-0 in the first period. Six minutes into the second period Zach Rocha tagged the back of the SVC net with an unassisted dart past Eschler to tie it up one all.
A double overtime was not enough to settle it as the final whistle blew with each team at a goal a piece. The tie creates an interesting standings situation for the NECC with SVC sitting in third place in the Conference (first overall) and Lesley right behind them in fourth place in the NECC (second overall).
The Mountaineers will look to regain first place in the Conference as they travel to Daniel Webster (5-2 overall, 2-0 NECC) Saturday, October 10th, at 1:00 p.m.
