Mountaineers Battle To 1-0 Loss Against Spartans
CASTLETON, Vt. - The Southern Vermont College Men's Soccer defense stood strong in a 1-0 loss to Castleton State College Tuesday night in non-conference action at the Spartan Stadium. The Spartan's Sean Fitzgerald scored the lone goal 19:27 into the game.
In what was the first evening contest at the new artificial turf facility, SVC and CSC did not disappoint the crowd of 450. Southern Vermont was able to keep the Spartans at bay, as Aaron Eschler turned away four shots in the first half (eight total). Eschler, the reigning New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Goalie of the Year could not fed off Sean Fitzgerald as he scored the lone goal at 19:27 with a nifty assist from Chris Mulholland.
Castleton's defense kept goalie, Mike Anthony clean for much of the game as Southern Vermont was able to get off just six shots in the loss. Anthony stopped all four that were on goal in earning the shutout.
Southern Vermont will play its home opener on Saturday, September 5th as part of the Southern Vermont Tournament. The Mountaineers square off with Regis College at 12 noon.
