BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Southern Vermont College Mountaineers men's soccer team tamed the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers when they defeated them 5-1 on Everett Field Tuesday night. The win gives SVC a five game winning streak which is the first since 1990.
Southern Vermont was led by captain Nick Haggerty who had a stellar game drilling two goals past the SUNY keeper and assisting Tony Martinez with one as the Mountaineers cruised to victory.
Southern Vermont improved to 6-2 while the Cobleskill fell to 2-6 with the loss.
Haggerty did not waste any time as he sent a perfect pass from Tony Martinez into the left side of the net only 40 seconds into the game. In the eighth minute they reversed roles as Haggerty lofted a cross to Martinez for the easy score making it 2-0 Mountaineers.
After a Fighting Tigers foul Alex Borini scored with an unassisted goal that made it through heavy traffic with only seconds remaining in the first period to make it 3-0 at the break.
SUNY put themselves on the board in the 50th minute off a Joe Crounse goal assisted by Mamadou Diallo to make it 3-1. Minutes later Haggerty scored his second goal of the day off a clever pass from Gus Chery to give the Mountaineers the added cushion.
In the 86th minute Ben Naaktgeboren got his third goal of the year when he beat the defense of an assist from Alex Greenough to make it 5-1 SVC.
Fighting Tigers goalie Mack Curran allowed five goals and had 10 saves in the loss. While Elias Skiff had one save and allowed no goals in 45 minutes and Aaron Eschler had one save and allowed one goal as he split time with Skiff in front of the net.
