SVC Men Find Win Column Again
POTTERSVILLE, N.Y. - Freshman forward Nick Haggerty (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park HS) scored two goals for the second straight game and sophomore Tony Martinez (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls HS) added two more as the Mountaineers men's soccer team won its second straight game, 5-1, over the Word of Life Huskies on Saturday.
With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 2-4 on the young season. It is the first time the SVC men's soccer team has won consecutive games since defeating Bard and Emmanuel in 2002.
Freshman Zach Reilly (Palmyra, VA/Fluvanna County HS) opened the scoring less than one minute into the contest with a shot from the right side. Haggerty doubled the lead less than 10 minutes later after a goalmouth scramble.
The rest of the first half saw the Mountaineers maintain possession while creating five more opportunities on goal.
"Our objective was to come out and score a goal in the first five minutes," said second-year Head Coach Tim Penrod. "In doing so, we were able to put the Huskies on their heels right from the start."
But the Huskies would not go away quietly and were able to build several counter-attacks early in the second half. However, a foul in their own box resulted in the first of two goals by Martinez. His second finish came off an assist on a corner kick from Haggerty.
Despite being down 3-0, Word of Life refused to fold and David Sutter was able to connect off of a long throw-in. The goal seemed to rejuvenate SVC, who went on to dominate the remainder of the game.
SVC looks to add to its winning streak when it hosts nearby foe Union College in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, September 16, at Everett Field on the Southern Vermont campus. Kickoff is at 4:30 PM.
