BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Southern Vermont men's soccer team gave its all but could not come up with its third consecutive win Tuesday in a 3-1 loss to Union College (4-1-1).  A victory would have given the squad its first three-game winning streak in over a decade.

Dutchman Ryan Benagan scored the game's first goal in the 19th minute as Union took a lead it never relinquished in the victory over the Mountaineers (2-5).

The Dutchmen doubled their lead 23 minutes later when Teddy Steen found the back of the net after a throw in deep into Mountaineer territory.  Steen's shot tipped off the gloves of Southern Vermont goalkeeper Elias Skiff (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham HS), who had six saves on the afternoon. Union College's third and final goal came in the second half when Chris Choquette connected with Jack Scott, who scored past the outstretched hands of diving SVC goalkeeper Aaron Eschler (Gloversville N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth HS).

Offensively, Southern Vermont failed to move the ball downfield on a consistent basis and was outshot by the Dutchmen, 36-2.Freshman Nick Haggerty (Wynantskill, N.Y./Averill Park HS) scored the Mountaineers lone goal in the 81st minute with a double assist from Tony Martinez (Hoosick Falls N.Y./ Hoosick Falls HS) and Neel Patel (Bennington, Vt./ Mount Anthony Union HS). It was Haggerty's fifth goal of the campaign.
