Mountaineers Outshot By Thoroughbreds

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Southern Vermont men's soccer team coming off a tough loss and only a day of rest in between games lost 6-0 on the road to Skidmore College. The Mountaineers were within reach of victory most of the game with the score 2-0 until the 72nd when the Thoroughbreds got four goals in 17 minutes to seal the win.

The Mountaineers (2-8-1) were outshot by Skidmore 33-2 in the loss. Sophomore Kevin Wood (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls HS) had a good look at the goal but could not get it past the hands of Thoroughbred goalkeeper Nick Peterson who had two saves. In what looked to be another scoring opportunity sophomore Dave Gage (Gloversville, NY/Broadalbin-Perth HS) shot a nice 20-yard strike that was once again stop by Peterson.

With six different Skidmore players scoring they improved to 6-3-2 this season. Matt Kelsey started off the scoring with his team-high fourth goal of the season.

Southern Vermont sophomore goalkeeper Elias Skiff (Durham, NY/Cairo-Durham HS) allowed two goals in the first period and had six of the Mountaineers 10 saves. Sophomore Aaron Eschler (Gloversville, NY/Broadalbin-Perth HS) replaced Skiff at half-time but allowed four goals.

The Mountaineers go on the road to face New England Collegiate Conference foe Lesley College  Saturday, October 4. Kickoff is at 12:30 p.m.
