BROOKLINE, Mass. - The Southern Vermont men's soccer team wanted to close out the 2008 season with a win but came up short against NECC foe Newbury College in a 3-0 loss on the road Saturday.
The Mountaineers although outshot 35-13, played remarkable defense holding the Nighthawks scoreless until the 44th minute of play. Anthony Fannoh III sent a good cross pass from Andy Osei past goalkeeper Aaron Eschler (Gloversville, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth HS) to make it 1-0 at the half.
Eschler had 11 saves and ended up with 150 saves this season. He finished with a 2-10-1 overall record with both wins being shutouts.
Freshman midfielder Nick Haggerty (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park HS) offensively led the way for Southern Vermont posting five shots, two of which Newbury goalkeeper William McNally had to dive and save. McNally finished with four saves on the day.
Nighthawks John Mawson and William Maddock each scored in the second period both goals being assisted by Kevin Gregory.
The Mountaineers end 2008 with a 2-13-1 overall record (1-5 in the NECC).
