CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Southern Vermont College took a 1-0 lead deep into the second half, but Lesley University was able to score two goals to capture the lead and hold onto a slim 2-1 victory over the Mountaineers Saturday afternoon. The Lynx improved to 4-6-1 (2-0 NECC) with the win while the Mountaineers dropped to 2-9-1 (1-2 NECC).
Both teams were held scoreless in the first half, despite shooting a combined 20 shots.
The second half, however, was a different story as Southern Vermont netted the match's first goal at 65:15 as Kevin Wood (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls HS) chipped an accurate 30 foot shot just over the fingertips of Lesley keeper Zachary Almeida-Beers and into the back of the net.
Just under six minutes later, Lesley's Yair Correa scored the equalizer with his first goal of the season as he blasted a free kick to the top right corner of the net.
Southern Vermont and Lesley seemed destined to go to overtime with just a minute remaining, but after Zach Rocha hit a cross pass into the box, junior back Scott Wheeler was able to direct a header past the Mountaineers keeper for the go-ahead goal.
Lesley held on in the games final seconds to remain undefeated in conference play.
For Southern Vermont, keeper Aaron Eschler (Gloversville, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth HS) was tested often in the game, as he was able to save 11 shots on goal by the Lynx.
Southern Vermont will host Becker College on October 11 on Everett Field. Kickoff is at 3:00p.m.
