Men's Hoops Falls In NECC Opener
BENNINGTON, Vt.- The Southern Vermont College Men's Basketball team opened its New England Collegiate Conference schedule Tuesday evening with a 79-63 loss. SVC hosted Wheelock College in Tuesday night's conference opener at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.
Bashir Hudson (Jamaica Plain, MA) led the Wildcats with a double-double as he recorded 21 points and 15 rebounds. Hudson dominated the offensive glass with six offensive rebounds. Max Kaim (Fort Lauderdale, FL), and Kyle Pierce (Burlington, MA) each had 12 points for the victors, as Elliot Hernandez ( Fort Lauderdale, FL) added 13 off the bench. Center Eric Rice (Woburn, MA) used his 6-9 frame to be a force on the glass for Wheelock as he finished with 12 rebounds and nine points.
The Mountaineers were led by NECC Rookie of the Week, Jordan Santiago (Westfield, MA) who scored 18 points. Santiago scored six of the first SVC eight points on the night. Captain Taeshon Johnson (Charlotte, NC) had a double-double for SVC with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Travis Severs (Bennington, VT.) chipped in with nine and Avery Mitchell (Schenectady, NY) added eight points.
Southern Vermont jumped out to an early lead Tuesday night. Four and a half minutes into the game Southern Vermont led 11-4. The Wildcats quickly responded to tie the game two minutes later, and took the lead for good at the 10 minute mark. The two sides traded baskets before Wheelock finished the first half on a 9-2 run, and took a 38-30 lead into the break.
To open the second half the Mountaineers started on a 10-2 run before a Wheelock timeout. Out of the timeout the Wildcats went on a 14-5 run of its own to open the score to 54-45. The Wildcats kept the lead between 10 and 17 for the remainder of the game to take the NECC opener 79-63.
Wheelock improved to 2-4 overall, 1-0 in NECC play while SVC drops to 0-7 and 0-1 in NECC play. SVC will return to non-conference action Thursday night at Union College, with tip-off scheduled for 7PM.
