Mountaineers Falter Due to Slow Start
BENNINGTON, Vt.- The Southern Vermont College Mountaineers fell Saturday in the consolation game of the Tri-State Shootout to the MCLA Trailblazers, at the Mountaineer Athletic Center. The Trailblazers used a strong opening five minute performance en route to an 83-75 win.
To start the game, MCLA made its first six shots and took a 14-1 lead. Southern Vermont quickly bounced back on a 8-0 run to keep it close, but for the next five minutes the two teams traded baskets. SVC made another 8-0 run down 22-13, to bring the game with in one. At the 5:34 mark Trailblazer, Tim Fish drained a three pointer to give MCLA a demanding 11 point lead. The Trailblazers hung on to that lead the rest of the half to go into the break at 48-38.
In the second half the two teams traded runs back and forth as the MCLA lead stayed between eight and sixteen points.
All-Tournament team selection Jordan Santiago led the Mountaineers with 22 points. Teammate, Taeshon Johnson chipped in with 20 as Robert McQueen went 11-11 at the free throw line to score 15. Senior Avery Mitchell also had 13 for SVC in the defeat.
MCLA was led by a balanced attack as Vernon Cross scored 15 to lead the Trailblazers. Tyriq Rochester and Chris Harris each scored 13 points and Bilal Shabazz had 10. MCLA outrebounded SVC 51-32 in the game with 20 of the boards on the offensive end.
Southern Vermont drops to 0-6 in the 2011 campaign while MCLA improved to 2-5. SVC will open conference play Tuesday when they host Wheelock at 6:00PM. MCLA will host Brandeis Wednesday at 7:30PM.
