BENNINGTON, Vt. – Senior captain Lance Spratling scored 20 points to lead the Southern Vermont College Mountaineers to victory 82-77 over the in-state rival Cadets of Norwich University in its season opener Monday night in the MAC. Junior forward Ben Naaktgeboren added a double-double for SVC with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
The Mountaineers (1-0) came out strong and jumped ahead in the first half with a 17-6 lead with 13:33 left in the 1st. The Cadet's (0-1) offense came into play and the hot shooting of senior guard Cori Boston who finished the game with a game-high 23 points.
Southern Vermont out-rebounded Norwich 44-43 and only committed 10 turnovers, to the Cadets 20.
Junior guard Taeshon Johnson and freshman forward Deshawn Hamlet each had 10 points for the Mountaineers. Rounding out the box for SVC are guards Derrick Cenicola (8 points) , Avery Mitchell (7 points), and Jorge Jorge (7 points).
Southern Vermont shot a stellar 44.1 % from the field and the Cadets nearly matched it with 42.4%.
Senior guard Jaren Jeffcoat and junior guard Josh Cabrera round out the box for Norwich as they scored 19 points and 15 points respectively.
