Colonels Power Past Mountaineers With A Strong Second Half

DANBURY, Conn. - The Southern Vermont College men's basketball team, leading by four at the break, let the Colonels run wild with a 23-0 run to open the second half as the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team came from behind to defeat SVC, 80-68 Thursday night at Feldman Arena. Guard Lance Spratling had a monster double-double with 30 points and 12 rebounds for the Mountaineers.
Sophomore guard DaQuan Brooks led the Colonials with 17 points, 13 of those markers coming after intermission.
The Colonials opened the second stanza with a pair of runs including a 35-9 outburst over a 13:40 span after the break. After eight ties in the first half, Southern Vermont scored the final four points over 1:11 and WC trailed, 39-35.
A free throw by Cody Byrne with 8:02 remaining in the contest gave the Colonials' their largest lead of the game, 24 points, 70-46.
Wilburt Jarrett and Bayne scored 12 and 10 points, respectively for the winners.
Southern Vermont's Lance Spratling dominated both ends of the court in the first half, scoring 22 points and grabbing eight boards. The Colonels defense stepped it up a bit in the second, holding Spratling to just eight points on 2-of-8 shooting from the field.
Avery Mitchell added 15 points for the Mountaineers as he shot 9-of-10 from the charity stripe for Southern Vermont.
With the win, WC's record improves to 15-4, while Southern Vermont falls to 5-13.
Southern Vermont is hosting New England Collegiate Conference rival the Becker College Hawks Saturday, February 6th, at 3:00 p.m.
