BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Southern Vermont College men's basketball team played host to New England Collegiate Conference foe the Daniel Webster College Eagles losing 79-74 Saturday in the Field House. SVC was led by senior Joe Karnik who had a solid double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds; as well as four blocks. The Eagles were led by junior guard Chris Hanson who had a game-high 28 points, including five from behind the arc.
The loss drops the Mountaineers to 5-11 (2-5 NECC), while DWC improves to 6-10 overall (4-4 NECC).
The Eagles held the lead for much of the game but both teams came out cold in the first with a 28-27 Daniel Webster lead after one. A monster second half for both squads, DWC 51, SVC 47, led to a thrilling close in an important Conference game.
The Mountaineers tied it up at 31-31 with 18:30 left to go in regulation but an Eagles 6-0 run created enough breathing room for the rest of the game. Southern Vermont fought hard and cut down a 14 point DWC lead to bring it within four with 54 seconds remaining. Foul trouble for both teams slowed down the pace of the game in the closing minutes as Daniel Webster went 6-for-8 from the line in the final 44 seconds.
Lance Spratling had 20 points for Southern Vermont and freshman guard Derrick Cenicola chipped in 12 points and eight boards.
Junior guard Chris Voukides had a solid outing for the Eagles converting several key baskets as he finished with 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Rounding out the offense for DWC were senior forward Adam Landry and junior forward Eric Suarez who each posted 11 points respectively.
Daniel Webster took advantage of Southern Vermont's 15 turnovers by scoring 15 points. While the Mountaineers followed its shots well scoring 21 points on second chance opportunities to the Eagles 10.
The Mountaineers are back in action Tuesday, February 2nd, when it travels to Elms College for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. The Eagles head to Wheelock College the same night (7:00 p.m.) and look to make it two in a row.
