Mountaineers Can’t Put Out The Blaze


CHICOPEE, Mass., - Southern Vermont men's basketball captain Joe Karnik's (Cambridge, N.Y.) season and career high 34 points and a team season high 88 points was not enough to stifle the offensive blast of NECC leader Elms College Saturday at Maguire Center as they fell 123-88. Southern Vermont was also hot from the field, as it shot 56.6-percent for the game, but was plagued by 41 turnovers.

The loss drops the Mountaineers to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the NECC losing three of their last four games. The Blazers improve to 13-1 overall and 3-0 in the NECC.

Karnik was hot in the first half knocking down 19 points on 8 of 11 shooting in the first half to keep Southern Vermont down just 55-47 at intermission. The Blazers led 81-63 with 13:07 remaining, but Karnik scored five of the Mountaineers' next six points in a 6-0 run over the next 49 seconds that pulled the visitors to within 81-69.

Junior guard Juan Galdon who netted a team-high 27 points connected from long distance to put out the fire on the SVC run and watched the 12 point difference turn into 35 by the final seconds of the game.

Three other players reached double figures for the Mountaineers, as freshman forward Cameron Herrington (Cambridge, N.Y.) scored 18 points, while freshman forward Ben Naaktgeboren (Cambridge, N.Y.) and sophomore guard Brendan Kordana (Adams, Mass.) finished with 15 points apiece.

SVC will be hitting the road again Tuesday, January 20, to face non-conference foe SUNY-IT (tip-off 8:00pm).
