Harrington Grabs 1,000th Rebound, SVC Loses
Poultney, VT-The Southern Vermont College men's basketball team lost 79-68 to the Newbury College Nighthawks in an Association of Division III Independents Men's Basketball Tournament semi-final game played in Poultney on the campus of Green Mountain College. Senior forward Nick Harrington (Brooklyn, NY/Grady), already the school's all-time leader in rebounds picked up his 1000th career board with 4:10 left in the first half. He also crossed the 1500-point milestone with a lay-in late in the second half.
Harrington finished with a game-high 32 points and a game-best 19 rebounds. He has 1,502 points and 1,010 rebounds with one game remaining. The points total is second all-time behind Charles Beekman.
Sophomore guard Keith Gaston (Detroit, MI/Oak Park) contributed 10 points and six steals.
Freshman guard Brendan Kordana (Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley) added 12 points, while sophomore guard Emory Wheeler (Virginia Beach, VA) tallied 12.
The green and white fell behind 11-0 in the opening minutes, but cut the score to 21-17 with five minutes left in the second half. Newbury led at the half 35-30. Newbury extended the lead to 11 at 52-41 with 12 minutes left, but SVC fought back and was as close as 67-63 with the ball and three minutes left. The good guys fell in the end by the same 11 points they allowed in the game's opening moments.
SVC will play in the consolation game at Green Mountain versus Finlandia (MI) at 1:00 p.m.
