Baseball holds 4th Annual Summer Camp
BENNINGTON, Vt.- The Southern Vermont College baseball team held its annual summer camp this past week, August 1st through the 5th. This year marks the fourth consecutive year the baseball program has held the camp. The 2011 camp was run by Head Baseball Coach Don Schaffer, Pitching Coach Dave Gage, and two local SVC players Andrew Morin (Hoosick Falls, NY) and Corey Armstrong (Bennington, VT).
The 2011 camp was the largest group yet for SVC. In 2011 the camp was able to break into two groups with a morning and an afternoon session. The morning session consisted of the younger age group, ages 7-12, which came from 9AM-12PM. The afternoon session was held from 1PM-4PM for ages 13-18.
"Each year we have tried to run two sessions, but never had enough participation so we would combine them" stated Schaffer. "This year we got the numbers we needed and it was nice to run two separate sessions."
Although there are two separate sessions, the camp schedule is exactly the same for both groups. Each day the instructors work a different part of the game. For instance, the players learned about being an infielder on Monday, Tuesday was pitching, Wednesday they became better outfielders, and Thursday each player was taught about catching. On Friday the camp was summed up with a complete wrap up of each position.
Throughout the week of camp there were multiple contests for players to win a prize. Some of the prizes consisted of an official Southern Vermont College game baseball, new and used. Other prizes consisted of a free pitching lesson with Coach Gage or a free hitting lesson with Coach Schaffer.
At the end of each day a scrimmage was played. The scrimmage gave all the camp participants an opportunity to work on the skills they learned that day and throughout the week. The scrimmages also gave the coaching staff an opportunity to see their instruction was working.
"Each day we ended with a scrimmage to see the improvement everyone made. It is tremendous to see from the beginning of each day to the end; not to mention from the beginning of the week to the final day," said Schaffer. "This camp is all about improving each and every player as much as we can, and I believe we did a good job at that this year."
