Baseball Recognized by D3baseball.com
The Southern Vermont College Baseball team was recognized for its remarkable year in the 2011 season on the d3baseball.com website. The website which has been running season wrap-ups for each conference noted the 2011 team took the program to a new level. The 2011 baseball team won a program record 18 games and reached the conference championship game for the first time in history.
Southern Vermont (10-8, 18-22): It was a historic season in Bennington, VT. Needing four wins in their final five games to make the playoffs, the Mountaineers did indeed do that and then road an upset of top-seeded Mitchell to the championship game of the NECC tournament.
Southern Vermont’s NCAA hopes were dashed as Mitchell won twice in the championship game but the Mountaineers made strides that will only lead to better things. They placed three on the all-conference first team in the process. Corey Armstrong, Dave Gage and Pat Warrington were all honored by the NECC for their contributions.
Armstrong hit .362 with five doubles and drove in 33. Gage finished his career as the all-time NCAA Division III leader in hit by pitch with 82. He hit .360 with 41 runs and walked 25 times to total a .577 on base percentage. Warrington wrapped up one of the best seasons in program history, hitting a team-high .388, 43 RBI, 15 doubles and 27 stolen bases. Those numbers also earned Warrington third team All-New England honors from the NEIBA.
