Mountaineers Fall To Eagles, Then Hawks In NECC Tourney

NASHUA, N.H. – The Southern Vermont College baseball team fell in the NECC Quarterfinal game 12-5 against the NECC number one seeded Eagles of Daniel Webster College Friday morning. The Becker College Hawks, who lost to Mitchell College in the afternoon game, defeated SVC in an exciting 5-4 finish in the nightcap. The Mountaineers finished the season 12-22.
Daniel Webster 12, Southern Vermont 5
The Mountaineers scored one in the top of the first on an error by the Eagles shortstop that made way for sophomore Pat Warrington who had walked and stole second.
Daniel Webster generate some hits in the bottom of the inning scoring four runs on two RBI singles and a two run blast over the leftfield fence by junior Bruce Brown.
A solo shot in the third inning by senior Nick Machaud made it 5-1 in the Eagles favor. Daniel Webster tacked on two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings including another two run homer for Brown, his second of the day.
In the seventh inning SVC senior Brett Pawlak tried to get things going with an RBI single and Warrington reached on an RBI infield single. Junior Dave Gage capped off the scoring on the inning as the Eagles pitcher threw it away to make it 9-4.
The Mountaineers could not muffle the Eagles hot bats giving up two RBI doubles and an RBI single in the eighth to make it 12-4. SVC tacked on one more run in the ninth when Pawlak knocked in sophomore outfielder Corey Briggs to make the final score 12-5.
Each squad had three errors in the contest but the Eagles had 15 hits to the Mountaineers six. Junior Adam Northup (3-5) took the loss on the hill for SVC pitching three and a third striking out one and allowing seven runs. Sophomores Will Warner and Greg Gilmore came out of the bullpen and both pitched well in the closing innings.
Sophomore Kory Kiro (5-2) got the win for the Eagles pitching seven innings striking out four, walking four, and only allowing two earned runs.
Southern Vermont 4, Becker 5
The Mountaineers were down 1-0 heading into the top of the third when it scored three runs on a two run single by sophomore Eric Wells and an RBI groundout by freshman Max Ginter to take a 3-1 lead.
The Hawks also had a three run third and took a 4-3 lead into the eighth inning when it tagged on another run to make it 5-3 heading into the ninth. The Mountaineers could only muster a run on an RBI single by freshman Corey Armstrong as the Hawks went on to the 5-4 victory.
Sophomore Connor Murray (1-5) got the loss on the hill for SVC as he struck out three, walked two, and gave up five runs.
Gage and Armstrong were named to the NECC All-Tournament Team for their exemplary play in the Tourney.
