Mountaineer Baseball Captures First Win, Splits With Finlandia

FORT MYERS, Fla.- Coach Schaffer's youthful team got on their winning way, Sunday, as they split a doubleheader against the Finlandia University Lions from Michigan. The Mountaineers dominated in the first game with a 5-0 win but lost the second in a close 8-3 decision.
In the first game, sophomore captain Adam Northup (Richmond, R.I.) was bringing all his right arm could from the mound in the squad's first win of the season. He threw a scoreless complete game, allowing only two hits in his seven innings of work. Northup struck out 12 Lions' batters and only walked three.
The Mountaineers got on the scoreboard first when sophomore captain Dave Gage (Gloversville, N.Y.) batted in freshman Andrew Morin (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) with a single. Finlandia's pitching was also strong, holding SVC to that sole run until the top of the seventh when the Mountaineers put up four insurance runs in the final inning. Sophomores Dan Cook (Watervliet, N.Y.) and Tim Johnson (Bernardsville, N.J.) both had two RBIs in extending the lead to what would be the game's final score of 5-0.
The men didn't fair as well in the second game of the day, as they let up eight runs (five earned) on seven hits. Finlandia put up a quick three runs in the top of the first inning, but SVC responded with two in the bottom of the second.
That score remained until the top of the fifth when the Lions scored three more with the help of some pitching mistakes, including a balk. The Mountaineer squad crossed the plate once in the bottom of the inning, only to let up another two in the top of the sixth. Those were the last runs of the game as SVC fell 8-3 in their fourth loss of the season. Ben Naaktgeboren lost his first start of the season from the mound.
Coach Schaffer's freshman looked promising as Pat Warrington (Folcroft, Pa.) was 3 for 3 with a walk and a run scored, and Eric Wells (Athens, Pa.) was 1 for 2 with two walks and two runs scored.
