SVC Baseball Kicks Off Florida Trip
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Mountaineer baseball squad lost a close one to Carroll University 13-11 in extra innings kicking off this year's 10 game Florida trip. Both team's bats were ready to swing in the opening contest of the Gene Cusic Classic as a total of 24 runs were put on the scoreboard.
The Mountaineers opened the game strong, tacking up two runs in the first inning thanks to some poor Pioneers' defense and an RBI single from sophomore Adam Northup (Richmond, R.I.). Carroll came back with one run in the bottom of the inning and brought in five more during the third.
SVC's patience responded in the top of the fourth, walking five times and scoring five runs of their own. Freshman Rob Murawski (Franklin Square, N.Y.) joined in the scoring with a two RBI single and a run scored.
The Mountaineers extended their lead to 9-6 with a two run top of the sixth. That lead lasted until the bottom of the seventh when Carroll went ahead with a 4 run inning.
SVC quickly regained the lead in the top of the eighth with a two run response, but gave up 3 runs in the ninth to lose 13-11.
Lead-off hitting sophomore captain Dave Gage (Gloversville, N.Y.) and sophomore captain catcher Dan Cook (Watervliet, N.Y.) were both 2 for 4 at the plate and each scored 2 runs on the day.
