SVC Names Michael McDonough Assistant Athletic Director

BENNINGTON, Vt. – Southern Vermont College announced Tuesday, that men's basketball head coach Michael McDonough will be taking on an additional leadership role as Assistant Athletic Director, effective immediately. Interim Athletic Director Jim Beckwith said, "McDonough's 33-plus years of experience in athletics and his strong belief in SVC's institutional values and goals, brings added strength to the leadership of the athletic program."

McDonough, who will take on the athletic role in addition to his architecture practice in Bennington, is excited for the opportunity. "Athletics at SVC over the past ten years has seen the arrival of a group of dedicated and experienced coaches who are committed to the programs' success" McDonough said, "I am proud and fortunate to be a part of it."

In the last decade, SVC Athletics has seen many upgrades with the addition of the new baseball and soccer facilities, the recent extensive exterior renovation of the Mountaineer Athletic Center (Field House), as well as new technology for the athletic staff.

McDonough has been an established fixture in Mountaineer Athletics for ten years. He first served as an assistant to Ryan Marks' 24-6 conference champions that advanced to the NCAA Second Round. He took over the program in 2004 as head coach. McDonough led SVC to the New England Collegiate Conference Quarterfinals, which it hosted, in 2009-2010.

One of his goals as Assistant AD is to reach out to the community. "An important goal at Southern Vermont is to expand our base of community support and involvement in Mountaineer Athletics," McDonough said.

McDonough will also continue his community involvement as a member of the Bennington Planning Commission, the Better Bennington Corporation and the Vermont Downtown Development Board. McDonough resides in Bennington with his wife Sandy.
